The Names of God

Jesus, The I AM

Before the first human being ever drew breath — He already was.

By Pastor Yolandita Colón

"Jesus answered, 'I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I AM!'" John 8:58 · NLT

When Jesus says "I AM," I can hear the Father speaking through the Son, because They are One. Jesus is speaking as the pre-existing Son of God. This is why He could say, "I and the Father are one" (John 10:30).

Notice carefully what Jesus does not say.

"Before Abraham was, I was."
"Before Abraham was, I AM."

This language points directly to God's revelation to Moses in Exodus 3:14: "I AM WHO I AM." Jesus is declaring that He existed before Abraham and that He carries the eternal identity of God. He is not simply claiming to be older than Abraham. He is revealing:

The Origin of All Origins

This is why His words shook the Pharisees. Think of the most powerful man or woman in all of history, and know that before that person was even conceived, Jesus was the I AM. For the Pharisees, Abraham was that person. They took pride in tracing their origin back to him. But Jesus is the Origin of all origins. Before Adam, the first human being, ever drew breath, Jesus was the I AM.

Jesus has always spoken the truth, and He is before all — past, present, and future. He is who He is no matter what you and I believe. No one and nothing can ever change the fact that Jesus is the I AM.

A Foundation That Cannot Be Moved

That means we can establish our lives on a Hope and a Foundation that was, is, and forever will be: Jesus, the great I AM. He deserves prominence in our daily lives. Before we do anything, we submit all things to the One who is before all things and who holds all things together.

Consult Him first. Consider Him first — today.
